“Grabe ang banal mo naman! Santo ka ata eh!” (Direct Translation: Wow, you are holy! Maybe you are a saint!)

In our country, being called a saint or holy indicates a bad thing.

When someone calls us saint or holy, the underlying meaning could be that you are a kill-joy person or someone who kills the good vibe. It could also be used to shame persons who are faithful in their church. If I think about it, the words “saint” and “holy” have been given different meanings because of the passage of time. It has turned to a period that no one wants to be called “saint” and “holy.”

Other people also have stereotypes about what a saint or holy person could be. They think they are people who are very spiritual and those who made miracles. However, Paul called all Christians saints in Ephesians 1:1 and Colossians 1:2.

Did he call Christians saints because they have never sinned or because they are perfect? No. Christians are all dead to sin yet saved by the bountiful grace of God. Did he call Christians saints because they died martyrs or did great movements? No. They are just simple people who allow Christ to show in their words and actions. Christians are called saints because they were all prisoners of sin who now walk in the manner worthy of the calling to which they have been called for. They look out not for self-interest but the interest of all. They have put off their old self and have been renewed in the spirit of their minds. With new self – created in the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness, they have put away falsehood, corrupting talk, bitterness, and wrath. They are kind to one another and forgiving. (Ephesians 4:22-32)

The world needs saints like you, especially the youth who are always eager and enthusiastic in furthering the kingdom of God. Saints are what make up God’s kingdom. As they say, our relationship with Jesus makes us saints forever. But we need to obey God through the power of the Holy Spirit. Being called saints or holy ones is equal to being called as children of God. So never be ashamed to call yourself or be called us saint. Let us bring back the beauty of the meaning of that word.
