One of my mentors asked me if I were to rank my top priorities in life, which would be my top priority? He enumerated God, family, friends, career, finances, and academics. At first, I had difficulty arranging my priorities in descending order since all of them are important to me. I knew that God should be my priority and everyone else follows. I arranged it with God being first then family, friends, finances, academics, and career.
But then my mentor said to me that there is no need to rank them, because ranking them according to their importance will show what we give less value. God is important because He is the Highest Divine Being that fulfills our purpose. Without God, our life would be meaningless and directionless. Family and friends are also important because we need our spiritual family whom we are growing with. Our career is also important because it plays a big role in our purpose in life and the type of service we offer to God.
Since all of these are important, what should we do?

In our family, friends, career, academics, and finances, we should be able to see God in it. God shouldn’t be separated from most of our life rather He should be the center in all aspects of our life. We should see God in our family, friends, career, academics, and finances. When we see God in our family and friends, we don’t only have our physical family instead we will create our spiritual family who will help us strengthen our relationship with God, redirect our path when we are lost, and grow with the characteristics of Christ. When we see God in our career, academics, and financing we are not after the money, fame, success that the world could offer, rather we are after our purpose in life. We use our skills and full potential not for ourselves but to serve God and to serve people. We use the gifts bestowed to us to be an instrument of God.
Balancing your life doesn’t mean you have to rank your priorities in life. Balancing your life means you are fully aware of the meaning of life – that is by including God in all aspects of your life. The purpose of our life is to serve people and serve God.
