According to biblword.net, Repentance means “the action of repenting; sincere regret or remorse.” It is hoped that they will realize they have done wrong and will not repeat the crime. In the Christian sense, this is what God is looking for too.
When I was in Grade 11, my former English teacher left us a task to perform in front of the class. If I remember it correctly, the task was to deliver a speech. I started writing my speech that night and I felt slightly confident about it. But, something was missing – my outfit. So I called my mom right away and instructed her to send my outfit to the bus conductor. I was surprised and mad at the same time because she did not make it for the first trip. That is why I shouted at her via phone call.
“You could have woken up earlier in the morning!”
“What am I supposed to wear then?!”
“I will try this afternoon”, she replied with a cracked voice.
I threw my phone furiously on my bed. After an hour, my phone rang. It was Dad this time.
“She already handed your package to the bus conductor. Just wait at the convenient store.”
I was going to cut off the line but my Dad released his last words.
“Your mom cried”. Then he hanged up the phone.
I went outside the convenient store right away and picked up the package. Happiness was drawn to my face. But I know that I should not be happy for I have done something wrong. So sincerely apologized to my mom.
In that moment, it was not difficult for me to realize that I have done a bad thing but for most of us, whenever we sin, we find it hard to acknowledge that we have done something wrong. The first step to repentance is confessing that we have committed sin. For whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy (Proverbs 28:13). In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents (Luke 15:10). Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded (James 4:8).If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).
This Lenten Season we must focus on becoming better Christians and one way to do it is to repent from our sins.
“The heavens will not be filled with those who never made mistakes but with those who recognized that they were off course and who corrected their ways to get back in the light of gospel truth.”
